Dear Agnes,
I am an English lawyer and have just watched the Newsnight programme describing your case. My mother had her first child, my eldest brother, on my grandmother’s kitchen table. He is 65 now and very healthy. I am the youngest and 51. I admire your courage. I am the first to think that, if there might be complications, it would be good to be close to a hospital. But when my mother gave birth to her first child she did not have anyone as expert as you are with her: just her GP and her Mum. She found it very soothing, as my father was already in Malaya, to have her mother there and her mother cooked her four scrambled eggs after the birth because she was so hungry! I pray that this prejudice will dissolve. The women who chose to have you deliver their babies are very lucky to have someone so expert, who does not take bribes either.

Here is his answer:
“Dear Mr. Talbot,
Thank you for your letter concerning the case of Agnes Gereb. I do not know the details of the charges against her, but most certainly the reason why she was charged is not that she is a home birth attendant. To the best of my knowledge, the Hungarian Government is in no way against home birth, let alone trying to criminalize it. However, thank you for calling my attention to the case, I will see to it that I get some information on the details. L. Pordany, ambassador”

This is an unbelievable and horrific situation! Treating women like they are common criminals if they choose to assist women/families who want to give birth in the sanctity of their homes, is reprehensible and needs to stop now!!! 11

I always thought Hungary was a civilized and enlightened country. Many Hungarian’s are known for ground breaking discoveries in the field of medicine. I am also shocked at the imprisonment with such horrific treatment. Free Agnes NOW and other women who are in prison or being charged with crimes for assisting home births. Please, Hungary, come into the modern world and respect your women and children.
