Silencing Voices in Weak Democracies
As the Former head of Ashoka Central Europe, and the representative who identified
and helped to select Ágnes Gereb into the pretigious Ashoka Fellowshio for her
much needed humanitarian, democratic, professional work, I am appalled to see
what the Hungarian authorities have done to this exceptional individual.
While “Red Sludge Barrons” are allowed to inundate and decimate
entire Hungarian villages and go free, an honest person with exceptional
integrity, embodying true democratic values, is incarcerated in the most
babaric manner. This looks to the eyes of the Hungarian public and world as a
modern form of witch hunt in Hungary. This action reinforces public mistrust in
Hungarian institutions and undermines the credibility of Hungary as a democratic
nation that upholds individual human rights. This means the rights of pregnant
women as well as the rights of Ágnes Gereb. I expected more from this new government and sincerely hope that European- and world-wide support for Ágnes Gereb.
I have just returned from Derry where I presented the case of Ágnes Geréb to an international audience. Many people want to become involved, including the Derry chapter of Amnesty International. I think all national chapters of Amnesty International should be notified and take action.
